College Football: 5 teams that could compete in a Power Five conference
Current conference: American
Possible destination: ACC
The UCF Knights provided an incredible storyline to follow in college football last season as they capped off an undefeated season with a Peach Bowl victory against Auburn.
Last season, UCF was the only team to finish the season without losing a single game — hence why the team dubbed itself the 2017 National Champions. This was for a plausible reason. After all, the Knights landed as the sixth-ranked team in the final AP poll. They also beat Auburn, who in the regular season, took down both Alabama and Georgia — the two teams that played for the championship.
The Knights also defeated Maryland, a Big Ten school, by 28-point drubbing last season.
2017 marked the second time the Knights won the American conference (UCF also won in 2013, but there was no conference championship game then). In both of those seasons, the Knights were led by top quarterbacks. In 2013, Blake Bortles impressed and last year, McKenzie Milton stole the show with a stellar season.
If there is one team that will be on the rise as a potential candidate for an upgrade to a Power Five conference, it will be UCF.
If the Knights were to join a Power Five conferences, becoming an expansion team to the ACC makes the most sense, at least from a football standpoint. Geographically, the school is situated between Florida State and Miami in the Sunshine State. UCF also fits the mold of ACC teams from a school perspective as it is a large, state-funded university.
The 2018 season will provide for an even better look at the prospect of UCF competing in a conference like the ACC because the Knights will face two teams in the conference — North Carolina and Pittsburgh.
