Texas Tech football already had a wobbly depth chart at wide receiver. The dismissal of Quan Shorts has made that area of concern even more precarious.

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury has dismissed junior wide receiver Quan Shorts from the team. At the moment, the athletic department has given no specific reason for Shorts’ dismissal, but it’s highly likely that it stems from his recent arrest.

Earlier this year, several Red Raider players, including Shorts, were arrested in March for a public scene at a Lubbock nightclub. The players were suspended and later reinstated. Now it looks as if Shorts’ legal troubles are far from over.

According to local beat writer Don Williams on his Twitter:

The school dismissed the junior receiver less than two hours later.  Ouch.  Talk about adding insult to injury. Although it might have been the right thing to do from a disciplinary approach, Shorts absence will be noticed this fall. Texas Tech needs plenty of help on the receiving front.

Shorts’ dismissal leaves a massive gap in the team’s offensive attack. The Red Raiders were looking to fill five receiver spots, and Shorts was talented. Last season, the wide receiver had nine receptions for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. On the heels of an up-and-down season, there would have been plenty of opportunities for Shorts to earn significant playing time.

Good news for kids on the JUCO recruiting trail, though–it looks like the Red Raiders will have a bunch of receiver spots open. Kliff Kingsbury has his work cut out for him in the upcoming fall season.
