Michigan State football coaches have identified 2019 quarterback Sam Saxton as a player who could earn an offer from the Spartans.

Michigan State football coaches thought they had their guy at quarterback in Dwan Mathis from Oak Park High School in Michigan when he committed to the Spartans on Sep. 23. Mathis ended up decommitting on June 24, leaving coaches searching for a new signal-caller. The staff quickly identified Sam Saxton as that potential guy.

Saxton is a 6-foot-5 195-pound pro-style quarterback from Austin, Texas. The big Texan has a big arm, who shows great accuracy. He has very sound throwing mechanics, with a quick release. He delivers the football with great pace and tempo.

People I’ve talked to mentioned Saxton as a guy with very high character, and an excellent student. The part of his game that sticks out the most,  is his pocket awareness. He stands in the pocket confidently when the pocket is breaking down and keeps his eyes down field.

Saxton comes from a football family, he told me “football runs through my veins.” His grandpa James Saxton was a running back for the Texas Longhorns. He finished third in the 1961 Heisman voting, and was selected as a unanimous All-American, the first Texas running back to earn that distinction. He was voted into the Texas football hall of fame in 1973, and holds the South West conference record for his 7.9 yards per-carry average. His Dad Jim Saxton was also a Texas Longhorn, he was a great athlete who ran a 4.3 forty. He played quarterback, safety, wide receiver and returned kicks for Texas.
