LSU Football: Recruits not scared of Coach O’s hot seat

LSU Football head coach Ed Orgeron has been on the hot seat since he took over in Baton Rouge, but recruits don’t seem to be intimidated by his job security.

Ed Orgeron was in the right place at the right time when he got himself hired as the head coach at LSU. Les Miles’ messy departure paved the way for Coach O’s arrival, but the fanbase hasn’t welcomed him with open arms — and for good reason. Orgeron lost to Troy at home two weeks after his team was smoked by Mississippi State 37-7.

Orgeron managed to pull the Tigers out of a tailspin, winning six of the last seven regular season games before falling to Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl. That got LSU, and Coach O, right back where they started. On the hot seat entering their next season.

And recruits don’t seem to care. On Thursday evening, Donte Starks, one of the nation’s top linebackers in the 2019 class committed to LSU:

LSU now owns the No. 3 recruiting class in the nation, sitting just behind a pair of schools from their own division: Alabama (No. 1) and Texas A&M (No. 2). The Crimson Tide have the best coach and perhaps the most stable program in college football history whereas the Aggies went out and hired one of the most established coaches in the game today. LSU has neither.

Whether it’s the brand itself or simply luck, Ed Orgeron hasn’t continued to get talent to LSU in droves. If he can keep things up he might just gather enough elite players to stay competitive in the SEC West and keep his job just a while longer. He has two 5-stars committed in the Tigers’ 2019 class so far, one more than Saban can claim. Perhaps Orgeron might be okay after all.
