Opening the year with a home showdown against FCS Weber State, the Utes should start the season with a victory. They turn around and travel to Northern Illinois the following week, then come back to Salt Lake City to begin conference play. Washington comes to Rice-Eccles Stadium before Utah’s bye week. Upon returning to the field, Utah faces Washington State in Pullman to close out September.

Stanford serves as the back half of a road swing to start October. A home date with Arizona is the first of two Friday-night games for Utah this year. USC comes to Salt Lake City on October 20. To close out the month, Utah heads to UCLA for another Friday-night contest.

Utah has road games against Arizona State at the beginning of the month and at Colorado to close out the Pac-12 season. Those two challenges are sandwiched around a home game against Oregon. The regular season closes out with the non-conference Holy War against state rival BYU. This year Utah gets to host the contest.

What’s next for Utah?

There really isn’t much to Utah’s early non-conference schedule. The Utes might be tempted to look ahead to the start of the Pac-12 season against the two Washington schools. But they cannot look too far ahead, lest they get trapped by inferior opponents and suffer an upset.

Prediction: 8-4 (5-4 Pac-12)

Utah is going to take care of business in all three of their non-conference games this season. Kyle Whittingham’s team won’t win the Pac-12 South this season, but they will put in a respectable effort that returns them to a bowl game for the fifth straight year.

Next: Post-spring Top 25 projections

Washington, Stanford, and USC are pretty much guaranteed losses for Utah this year. They are also likely going to drop one more Pac-12 contest, with the trip to UCLA or the home game against Oregon as the most likely culprits.
