Notre Dame Football: Brandon Wimbush being overlooked for Heisman
Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush is getting overlooked for the Heisman Trophy, and it’s largely due to where he plays, but that’s not the only reason.
From a passing standpoint, Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush was terrible last season. He only completed 49.5 percent of his passes for a total of 1,870 yards and 16 touchdowns.
However, he did produce with his legs. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry, and scored 14 times on the ground. Yet no one is considering Wimbush for the Heisman. Why? It’s simple. He plays quarterback for the University of Notre Dame.
In recent vintage, The University of Notre Dame hasn’t exactly been a haven for quarterbacks. They’ve had some good ones, even decent ones, but they’ve never landed a top recruit at quarterback. In fact, it has been 54 years since Notre Dame even had a Heisman winning quarterback. So, it’s very easy to over look a quarterback from the Fighting Irish.
No one expects Notre Dame to be in the hunt for a national championship either. So, that means playing quarterback for a team that isn’t even in the national title picture will get you overlooked too. However, that also stems from where he plays rather that his actual ability.
Grated, he does have to improve on his completion percentage. That said, if he does that, and combines it with his athletic prowess, the sky’s the limit for him and this team.
Notre Dame no longer carries the caché it once did. So, having Heisman and national championship expectations are a thing of the past. However you have to remove all of that from your expectations, because it’s not supposed to be like an MVP award. The Heisman is supposed to go to the most outstanding player in college football, not someone who helps his team win necessarily.

Wimbush has the chance to be just that. He just needs some improvements in his game, and he should be able to enter the conversation, but for now, he’s getting overlooked for ridiculous reasons.
