Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer could find himself in hot water after assistant coach Zach Smith’s latest domestic incident.

Controversy is reigning supreme for Ohio State on Monday, the opener of 2018 Big Ten Media Days. No, Urban Meyer isn’t accused of breaking any laws, but rather making a poor moral decision.

Receivers coach Zach Smith, who has been on Meyer’s staff for 11 years dating back to Florida days, had a civil protection order filed against him by his ex-wife, per Dan McMurphy. That may seem like such a small infraction compared to what other coaches and players have been handed, it seems, in recent years, but the protection order highlighted past run-ins with the law for Smith.

Those run-ins, according to McMurphy’s report, includes an aggravated battery arrest after throwing his pregnant ex-wife, Courtney Smith, against a wall.

Smith was served with the civil protection order on Friday which is supposed to keep him 500 feet away from his ex-wife as she feels as there is an existing threat with him.

This brings up the question: why wasn’t Smith let go back in 2009 when he was arrested for aggravated battery?

Though it could be argued he didn’t want to take action because Courtney never pressed charges, he should have kept a no tolerance rule like most colleges do when it comes to domestic assault.

Keeping Smith aboard for 11 years after the incident raises red flags and could land Meyer in hot water, although it’d take much more for him to be let go.

No, Meyer won’t be fired, but he could receive a minor punishment from Ohio State following this news, especially since it makes him look like someone who condones this behavior.

It’s time to hold all coaches responsible, especially when it comes to tolerance with domestic issues.

UPDATE: Urban Meyer made the right move, firing Smith on Monday evening.
