No. 5: Bobby Bruce, Linebacker

Bobby Bruce was undoubtedly the best linebacker for the Pirates in 2017, but his injuries and issues in the classroom kept him from reaching his full potential.

Still, Bruce was an absolute menace at the position. His anticipation and hard-hitting set him apart from his peers, but that same aggressiveness also drew a couple personal foul penalties that hurt the team. In nine games with the Pirates, Bruce tallied 23 tackles.

His high school coach, Wayne Lawrence, said Bruce was, “one of the most special players [he’s] ever coached.” He even set the school record with 157 tackles. In the Netflix series, Lawrence said Mississippi State and Florida offered Bruce, but academics kept him from attending.

Things didn’t pan out for Bruce the way he’d hoped, not receiving much D-1 attention following his freshman year at Indy C.C. His football career seems to be on hold for the immediate future after being arrested for armed robbery in Palm Bay, Fla., in June.
