Look back to Texas Tech

This is not the first former Texas Tech player that was featured on at least one season of Last Chance U. Thompson was the only former Texas Tech player featured at ICC. He had a lot of potential in a wide open offense with the Red Raiders, but could not make the most of the opportunity he was given.

However, current standout Texas Tech linebacker Dakota Allen made his way back to Lubbock following his appearance on Last Chance U at East Mississippi Community College. Allen is now one of the best linebackers in the Big 12, and potentially the best player that the Red Raiders have rostered now altogether.

Texas Tech didn’t get much use out of Thompson even for the one year he was in Lubbock, during the 2013 campaign. That was a Texas Tech roster that was loaded with talent for head football coach Kliff Kingsbury, looking back at it now. That Texas Tech team had Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield at quarterback, running back DeAndre Washington, and tight end Jace Amaro.

It’s easy to see how Thompson got overshadowed at Texas Tech, but his chance to shine in the spotlight would’ve come eventually with how the program operates. Thompson was mainly used on special teams, as he was at ICC last year, in his one year playing for the Red Raiders.
