Michigan State football took a hit today when Mark Dantonio announced Josiah Scott could miss two months or less after suffering an injury in camp.

Josiah Scott a sophomore cornerback suffered an injury during camp, and could miss two months. Scott was one of the top corner backs in the country as a true freshman last year, and his absence will be a hit to the Michigan State football team. He will most likely miss three games for the Spartans.

If there’s a silver lining for the Spartans, it is that he should be back before any of their big games, and the Michigan State football program has a lot of very talented cornerbacks on their roster. I’ll take a look at some of the guys who could help cushion the blow.

Shakur Brown a red shirt freshman from Georgia, who was a late addition to the 2017 recruiting class is a guy who coaches and teammates have raved about since he arrived on campus. Had Brown arrived on campus when all the other freshmen did last year, I don’t believe he would’ve red shirted. Brown is a 5-foot-10, 176-pound corner who loves to play press coverage and is very physical.

Josh Butler a junior cornerback from Texas is the most experienced option for the Michigan State football coaches to turn to. Butler has multiple starts and a lot of reps under his belt already. Butler has had success being one of the top backups for the Spartan defense, and won’t be bothered by the magnitude of the moment.

Kalon Gervin is a true freshman who was an early enrollee arriving in East Lansing in the winter, participating in winter conditioning and spring football. Gervin is a very decorated recruit from Cass Tech in Detroit. Gervin is a player who has been viewed as a big time player for a long time, and has been groomed by many older players and coaches in Detroit for stardom. He is a physical cornerback with great speed.

Davion Williams is a true freshman from Bellville (Mich.) High School. Williams is an athletic freak who stands 6-foot-0 and weighs 179 pounds. What Williams lacks for in experience he makes up for in athletic ability and length. He is a competitive player who came into camp with the mindset of forcing his way on the field this season, the injury to Scott has opened up an opportunity for him to seize.

Chris Jackson is a 6-foot-0, 190-pound cornerback from Georgia. Jackson a true freshman is very similar to Davion Williams in that he is a freak athlete, with great length. Jackson played for a very good high school program in Lassiter, that produces a lot of division one talent, especially defensive backs. Like most of the guys, what he lacks in experience he makes up with ability and athleticism.

Tre Person a sophomore defensive back from Georgia is another option. He played last season for Michigan State as a true freshman. He played mostly safety and special teams last year, but is a guy with top-level speed. Person, like Butler is a guy who’s got experience under his belt and won’t be nervous when the lights come on. Person is a very physical player even though he’s only 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds.
