West Virginia Football: 5 reasons Will Grier will win the Heisman
West Virginia football starting quarterback Will Grier thrust himself into the spotlight last year. His numbers show he’s poised for a run at the Heisman.
The college football nation first learned of Will Grier as a redshirt freshman quarterback for the Florida Gators, but he was also recognized because of his social media-famous brother, Nash. His best start of his freshman season came against Ole Miss, where he threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns, completing 24 of 29 passes in the process. Nine days later, he was handed a one-year suspension by the NCAA for performance-enhancing drugs. At season’s end, Grier announced he was transferring to West Virginia.
Grier sat out the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules and returned for the 2017 season-opener as the Mountaineers starting quarterback. He came back with a vengeance, passing for 3,490 yards, 34 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a completion percentage of 64.4 percent. However, his season came to an early end after having surgery on a broken finger he suffered in their 11th game against Texas.
Looking at these statistics and a number of other factors we will get into in this article, there’s no question in my mind that Will Grier should absolutely be a serious contender for the Heisman Trophy this season. The Mountaineers have never had a winner in the program’s 127-year history, but this year might be the best shot they’ve ever had.
