In their first year under Jimbo Fisher, can Texas A&M football rise to the occasion and make their names known among the elite programs in college football?

Since joining the SEC in 2012, the Texas A&M Aggies have had both their ups and downs, posting a 25-23 record in conference play. For 2018, the Aggies look to begin a new era with new head coach, Jimbo Fisher. Fisher is already off to a great start, finishing with a top 20 recruiting class in 2018 (247 Sports). In addition to his recruiting class, Fisher inherits an already talented Aggie football team.

On offense, Fisher has two quarterbacks to choose from who both have a year under their belt and showed flashes in 2017. But the catalyst for the Aggie offense is running back Trayveon Williams, who has rushed for over 1,800 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first two seasons at Texas A&M. Their biggest concern on offense could be replacing their top receivers from a year ago, including special teams standout, Christian Kirk.

For the Aggie defense, the bring in a new defensive coordinator, Mike Elko, who has built a reputation of producing dominating defenses. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson looks to be the leader of that reinvented defense after posting 104 tackles (10 TFL), 5.5 sacks and three interceptions in 2017. With Myles Jones and Debione Renfro gaining experience as freshmen last season, and bringing in one of top defensive backs in the 2018 class, Leon O’Neal Jr., the back end of the 2017 Aggies defense should be much improved.

A new coaching staff, talent on both sides of the ball and a new chapter in Texas A&M football, could have the Aggies surprising their SEC foes. A team viewed by many as a year away has the opportunities to do some big things in 2018.
