Linebacker
Outside Linebackers: J.D. Davis, Isaiah Simmons
Backups: James Skalski, Jalen Williams
J.D. Davis is currently slotted in as one of the starting outside linebackers and as the fifth leading tackler returning to the defense, I think he can make a strong case for an All-Conference nod. He racked up 55 tackles last year and was very good defending the run. If he can rack up a few more sacks this season you could be looking at an X-factor in the playoffs.
Simmons was very impactful in the passing game, as he broke up five passes last year and made 49 tackles. His ability to drop back into coverage will be valuable against opposing tight ends and slot receivers.
James Skalski and Jalen Williams both made contributions on defense last season. Skalski is 11th in tackles for all returning defensive players and could produce a 40+ tackle season if given the opportunity. Williams should also see an expanded role and could also be used in passing situations.
Inside Linebacker: Kendall Joseph
Backup: Tre Lamar
The leader of the linebacker unit is Kendall Joseph. After earning a third-team All-ACC nod last season expect Joseph to be a key reason the Tigers can make it back to the playoffs.
He returns to the team with 87 tackles and ten quarterback hurries last season and has a legitimate chance to reach 100 tackles this year. Look for Joseph to make plays all over the field this season.
