Oklahoma football is losing some key pieces from its College Football Playoff team in 2017, but how will the Sooners fare in 2018?

Lincoln Riley has some key positions to fill in 2018, including the quarterback spot which has been left vacant with the departure of Heisman winner Baker Mayfield. Kyler Murray is the favorite to win the job, but he needs to prove he’s capable of taking over and dominating, showing a bigger sense of urgency under center — he has the talent.

Also gone are tight end Mark Andrews and left tackle Orlando Brown, but the pieces seem to be in place right now for another successful season in the Big 12.

Defensively, the Sooners improved from their horrid 2016 showing and finished 67th in the country in yards allowed and 68th in scoring. No, that’s still not great and national title-worthy, but the defense is headed in the right direction.

As for the schedule, Oklahoma has a tough one with a non-conference bout against the Chip Kelly-led UCLA Bruin in Week 2 and will travel to Iowa State in Week 3 — we know how the Cyclones treated the Sooners last season in Norman.

Two weeks later, the Sooners get Baylor, then Texas in the Red River Showdown before traveling to TCU and getting Kansas State at home.

In two of the final four games of the year, the Sooners get Oklahoma State at home and West Virginia on the road to close the season.
