Ohio State Football: Top 5 candidates to replace Urban Meyer if Buckeyes move on
1. Matt Campbell (Head Coach, Iowa State)
Cyclone fans, now would be a good time to look away. Matt Campbell is arguably the hottest prospect on the head coaching market and deservedly so. In just two short years, Campbell has transformed perennial Big 12 doormat into a respected program with whispers of a darkhorse run to a Big 12 championship. This is nothing short of amazing for those on the outside looking in, but Campbell has seen this coming.
Campbell, one of the youngest coaches in all of the Power 5 conferences, was an All-American defensive lineman at Division III powerhouse Mount Union following a year stint at Pitt. Immediately following his graduation, Campbell got right into coaching, spending two years as a GA at Bowling Green before returning to Mount Union for two years. Campbell then returned to Bowling Green and eventually moved to Toledo, where he worked his way up to head coach in 2011. Campbell led a highly successful tenure at Toledo before Iowa State hired him following 2015.
Campbell has many reasons to leave Ames for Columbus. The first is a good part of the talent he’s drawing to Iowa State comes from the Great Lakes region, he has made a living off of kids from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan since his arrival at Iowa State.
Second, he is an Ohio-native and a guy as bright as Campbell knows how the Ohio State program works. Third, there has been a connection between Ohio State and Iowa State dating all the way back to Sam Willaman, a head coach for both universities before World War II. Coaches such as Earle Bruce and Tom Herman have spent time in both places and have been successful at each stop.
