Oklahoma State Football: Why Taylor Cornelius is not the answer for the Pokes
Not a long-term future with Cornelius under center
Due to the fact that Cornelius is a senior, younger options should be explored by the Oklahoma State coaching staff this season. Brown is a different case since he comes with the valuable experience as a grad transfer and therefore gives a clear roadmap for other signal callers like Sanders and Wudtee.
Let’s say all works out with Cornelius as the starter this fall and Brown and Sanders are able to redshirt, that means the future is very bright under center. However, that is the only case where starting Cornelius for the bulk of the regular season winds up as a success.
Oklahoma State has enough talent on both sides of the ball to where it can still compete for a fourth straight double-digit win season. However unlikely that may be given the depth around the Big 12 this year, Gundy shouldn’t waste what could be the last season with skill position weapons like Stoner, McCleskey, and Hill.
If Cornelius was earning the trust of the coaching staff as a sophomore or junior in 2018, this story could be different. But, the fact of the matter is that he’s a senior and this is a rebuilding year for the Oklahoma State offense with the loss of Rudolph and wide receiver James Washington. There should be a better answer under center for the Pokes by season’s end.
