Texas Football: Game-by-game predictions for Longhorns’ 2018 season
Texas football has high expectations heading into the 2018 season, but how will it play out for Tom Herman and the Longhorns?
Tom Herman is entering his second season as head coach of the Longhorns, but can he lead the program back to relevancy?
In his first season, Texas went just 7-6 with a win in the Texas Bowl over Missouri. The Longhorns bring back six starters on each side of the ball and the media is high on them, voting them into the preseason AP Top 25 at No. 23.
The Longhorns face an uphill battle, though, trying to dethrone Oklahoma as Big 12 champion and take over as the premier team in the conference. It’ll be tough given the fact that Lincoln Riley, too, is one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the country. This could be an extremely competitive rivalry for years to come.
With a tough schedule, solid core of returning starters and upperclassmen as well as two serviceable quarterbacks, Texas could soon be “back”.
How will the Longhorns fare in 2018?
This happened to be one of the more disappointing losses for Texas last season. Hosting Maryland in the season opener and kicking off the Tom Herman era, the Longhorns failed to take care of business, giving up 51 points to the Terrapins who went on to finish 4-8 and miss a bowl.
However, the Terps were without an adequate starting quarterback all season long as Tyrrell Pigrome and Kasim Hill both suffered season-ending injuries. The latter is projected as the starter this season and he’ll likely get the green light against the Longhorns in a rematch of the wild and whacky 2017 contest.
Maryland may be without a coach come Sept. 1 as the DJ Durkin investigation is still ongoing, so that puts the Terrapins in a tricky spot. Texas will get revenge for least year’s loss and take care of the Terrapins thanks to the arm of Sam Ehlinger.
The sophomore quarterback has a plethora of weapons at receiver and he’ll take advantage of that, passing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns as the Longhorns shut down the Maryland offense.
Final Score: Texas 34, Maryland 21 (1-0)
