Josh Allen is gone, but Wyoming football looked just fine in a Week 0 win over New Mexico State. Here are three things we learned from the Cowboys’ victory.

There was uncertainty entering the 2018 season for Wyoming. A year after losing Brian Hill from the backfield, quarterback Josh Allen moved on to the NFL as a first-round draft pick. Perhaps more importantly, though, the Cowboys needed to prove they could get the job done not just on offense but also on defense.

They did just that in a 29-7 beatdown of New Mexico State on the road in Las Cruces in Week 0 action. Wyoming showcased its skills on both sides of the ball, showing solid development on offense and as formidable a defense as ever. The Pokes still have room for improvement as they confront 2018 in earnest, but they showed a resilience that bodes well for the new year.

With Washington State and Missouri looming in the coming weeks, Wyoming passed its shakedown test ahead of the statement opportunities against Power Five competition. On a day where Colorado State fell against Hawaii, the Pokes seem to be the team best positioned to challenge Boise State in the MWC Mountain this year.

What did we learn from the definitive victory over newly-independent New Mexico State? Keep reading for our three takeaways from Wyoming’s win in Las Cruces on the first day of the long kickoff weekend of the 2018 season.
