LSU football finally has a starting quarterback with elite potential for the first time in five years as Joe Burrow has won the starting job.
Danny Etling did his job and exhausted his eligibility, but he was never the type of quarterback to take over a football game with his arm. Before Etling was a mixture of so-so quarterbacks, most notable Brandon Harris who could never seem to put it all together.
So when Joe Burrow transferred in from Ohio State after spring ball, the Tigers knew they had a chance to start a quarterback with serious potential for the first time since Zach Mettenberger was slinging dimes back in 2013.
On Monday, Ed Orgeron made the announcement that Burrow would be the team’s starting quarterback in the season opener, passing up sophomore Myles Brennan.

Burrow's experience & decision-making pushed ahead of Myles Brennan & his big arm, but Brennan will play & could redshirt if he doesn't play in more than 4 games.@SINow
Is this a surprise? Slightly, but Burrow has the experience and it shows just how smart of a guy he is that he could come in after spring ball, learn the offense and win the starting job. Not many college kids can grasp an offense in just a couple of months. He clearly knew what he was doing transferring to the SEC to play for the Tigers.
Burrow will be the second straight former Big Ten quarterback to start for the Tigers.
Brennan may still have a bright future in Baton Rouge, but he’ll have to wait for his opportunity as Burrow isn’t the type of guy to squander an opportunity. Heck, he almost beat out Dwayne Haskins for the starting job at Ohio State.
The rest of the SEC should take notice of this move as it gives the Tigers’ offense a much-needed upgrade under center and Burrow is the type of player who can burn defenses in multiple ways.
Watch out for the Tigers in the SEC, folks.
