College Football: Top 30 breakout candidates for 2018 season
Nick Chubb and Sony Michel left Georgia as the No. 2 and No. 3 running backs in school history, trailing only Herschel Walker in rushing yards. That left the keys to one of the most prolific rushing offenses in the country to a pair of young ballcarriers.
378 carries, 2,572 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns are out the door. That load was expected to be shared by sophomore star-to-be DeAndre Swift and true freshman phenmon Zamir White. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, White suffered a torn ACL in fall camp. That’s a tough blow for the Georgia offense, but it secures Swift’s position as the true workhorse back.
If Swift can carve out half of the production shared by Chubb and Michel a season ago he’s looking at a 189 carry, 1,286 yard and 15 touchdown season. That’s going to put him near the top of the SEC in each of those categories and within striking distance of an invitation to New York City for the Heisman Trophy Ceremony if he can add a few more scores to that pace.
Swift is set to be the lead running back for a potential College Football Playoff team that is committed to running the football. You can’t get much better than that.
