Texas A&M football is 1-0, but the Aggies have already begun looking ahead at their home game against the Clemson Tigers in Week 2.

A jam-packed mass of maroon and white stood in anticipation Thursday night. They watched with glee as their Texas A&M Aggies thoroughly dismantled Northwestern State. In a game which transpired as expected, fans were already looking ahead to next Saturday by halftime. The sea of maroon will be even more fervent next weekend when the Clemson Tigers come to town.

At the risk of stating the obvious, Jimbo Fisher wasn’t hired to beat Northwestern State. He was hired to beat Clemson, to beat Alabama and to earn the Aggies’ their first-ever trip to the SEC Championship game and eventually, the College Football Playoff.

The Aggies’ victory over Northwestern State was a stepping stone in the right direction and a harbinger of what is to come, power running, defense and four quarters of tenacity. The late-season failures under Kevin Sumlin should be a thing of the past. The players and the staff have said all the right things over this offseason, but now they’ll have the chance to prove it against one of the toughest opponents in the nation.

Jimbo Fisher and Dabo Swinney both belong to an exclusive club of National Championship-winning head coaches. Its the Aggies that have yet to climb the mountain, and outside of a miracle run in 2012, haven’t really come close, yet.

Now, after what feels like decades of waiting, Clemson. Regardless of the outcome, Texas A&M football will be ready to play games of this magnitude, frequently. The Aggies aren’t the new kids on the block anymore. They’re ready to go toe-to-toe with the giants.
