The Fifth Quarter series is back and covering the first Saturday of the 2018 college football season. Here are five major takeaways from the opening Saturday.

The weekend actually started off Thursday night with UCF pounding UConn before Wake Forest struggled with Tulane and Northwestern just edge Purdue.

On Friday night, Michigan State struggled with a feisty Utah State Aggies squad before pulling it out late. Stanford handily beat San Diego State but not because of Bryce Love but instead K.J. Costello threw for over 300 yards.

On Saturday the college season went in full swing with College GameDay, where Lee Corso picked Notre Dame over Michigan, and the noon kickoff running all the way through late-late-late game with Hawaii edging Navy 59-41.

It was your typical college football day with NC State fans acting wild, a playoff contender nearly choking to a Group of Five, and of course Texas proving they’re far from back.

The big showdown games didn’t disappoint, but we don’t want to give away the entire article. It’s a great feeling to be back and being excited for college football season means you like pumpkin beer, Charlie Brown specials, and the autumn wind. There’s already controversy, Jim Harbaugh losing, and wild fans.

Here are my five takeaways from the first Saturday of the 2018 season.
