Florida State football struggled mightily in a 24-3 Labor Day loss to Virginia Tech. Here are three things we learned about the Seminoles after losing to the Hokies.

After barely reaching bowl eligibility in 2017, Florida State entered the new season ranked once again and hoping that better luck avoiding injuries will allow a chance to play for the ACC Atlantic in 2018. The Seminoles got back Deondre Francois at quarterback and had enough offensive talent returning that gave them a shot to compete with Clemson in the division.

No. 19 Florida State hosted No. 20 Virginia Tech in a showdown of top-20 ACC teams in a Monday-night showcase that wrapped up Labor Day weekend. The lower-ranked team prevailed with a defensive effort that showed Florida State is going to be a work in progress in Willie Taggart’s first season at the helm in Tallahassee.

The story didn’t quite go to script, as the Seminoles fell 24-3 in a listless performance at Doak Campbell Stadium. Experience didn’t equate to execution, as Virginia Tech clamped down repeatedly and prevented Florida State from getting downfield into dangerous scoring positions.

What did we learn from Monday night’s loss at home for the Seminoles? Here are three takeaways from the season-opening conference defeat to the Hokies.
