In Week 1 of college football, there were a handful of game that were nearly upsets. Here are the games that qualify as the three worst losses of the week.

The week of close games started, on the Friday of Week 1, when Utah State took their game against Michigan State down to the wire. The Spartans pulled the win out by a touchdown, 38-31.

The scares continued when Appalachian State almost shocked the world again in their trip to State College against Penn State.  After the Mountaineers’ kicker missed a long field goal attempt to win the game in regulation, the game went to overtime where the Nitty Lions won, 45-38.

Now, let’s take a look at the games that actually did result in a loss. An honorable (kind of) mention goes out to the UCLA Bruins and their surprising loss  to Cincinnati. The Bearcats were likely going to be UCLA’s easiest opponent on the year. However, after Wilton Speight injured his back in the first half, the game became much tougher for UCLA to win. Cincinnati came away with the 26-17 win.

As for the top three worst losses, we start with the Big 12.
