Clemson Focused on Depth

The Clemson Tigers did all they could without complete embarrassing Furman. As expected, Clemson was in complete control throughout their Week 1 blowout, winning 49-7.

Nine different Clemson players rushed the ball and eleven different players recorded a reception. Additionally, the Tigers played three quarterbacks. Speaking of quarterbacks, both Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence saw significant playing time with similar numbers. The eye test suggests the freshman, Trevor Lawrence, will start in next week’s game. However, it is hard to go against Bryant, who had a great 2017 campaign for coach Dabo Swinney.

Getting more players involved during relevant game time (even against Furman) early on in the season only aids in the development of players and the overall depth of the team. Talent is not an issue for the Tigers. However, since injuries are inevitable as the season goes on, having players who can fill in without a hiccup is invaluable for a championship-seeking team.

The Tigers head to College Station, Texas next week to face the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies looked very good in Week 1 against Northwestern State, in a 59-7 win. But again, it was only Northwestern State. We will soon find out how good Clemson really after their away game against a much better team in Week 2.
