The Tale of Two Quarterbacks

Alabama entered Week 1 atop the college football rankings. And, rightly so. The Crimson Tide are the reigning champions who returned both of their star quarterbacks. The Alabama quarterback battle between Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa stole the show in the Tide’s opener against the Louisville Cardinals.

Despite the 51-14 blowout, Louisville was clearly a much tougher opponent than those Wisconsin, Clemson, and Georgia faced. In the commanding win, it appears as though Tagovailoa took the lead in the quarterback competition. Tagovailoa passed for 227 and two touchdowns and went 12-for-16 on passing attempts. Hurts on the other hand, attempted only nine passes, and complete five, for a total of 70 yards. Furthermore, Tagovialoa’s first three drives resulted in touchdowns, where Hurts’ first two drives resulted in punts.

Coach Nick Saban wouldn’t commit to naming a starter and still probably won’t before Week 2. Alabama makes their home debut against Arkansas State next week, where both quarterbacks will get playing time again. So long as Alabama can keep winning convincingly, it betters the team to have both quarterbacks get in-game repetitions.
