Big 12 Football: ‘Eers surge as Longhorns plummet
I’ve got the feeling Kansas probably isn’t leaving this spot this season. The Jayhawks lost what seemed to be their only truly winnable game of the season this weekend against Nicholls State, and honestly, I would be shocked if they put a single win up for the rest of the season. David Beaty is not the man for this job, and he’s proven that time and time again. His tenure has been a disaster, and I don’t think he should last the season.
It can be said that Kansas doesn’t have enough talent to be good, and that’s true. However, they are still a power-five team and a team that is significantly more talented than an FCS opponent like Nicholls State. There’s no excuse to lose this game, and there’s really no way I see this problem get fixed any time soon.
Like I said, these rankings are reactive, not predictive, so Texas Tech probably won’t actually finish ninth, and they’re probably not actually the ninth best team in the conference, but after one week, my hopes are not high for the Red Raiders. The “new and improved” Texas Tech defense was absolutely gashed by an (admittedly awesome) Ole Miss offense, as they fell to the Rebels by 20, 47-27.
That hyped defense looked helpless for much of the game, being gashed by a great passing attack and by a rushing attack that really no one expected much from this year. They couldn’t stop big plays, they couldn’t tackle underneath plays, and just as a whole, it was a disappointing start. Offensively, the loss of McLane Carter looks to be a huge blow, as backup Alan Bowman looked nowhere near ready to play. This is a prove it year for Kliff Kingsbury, and so far, he hasn’t proven anything good.
