1. Notre Dame scores two special teams touchdowns

The 2017 season served as a bland year in terms of special teams explosiveness for the Irish. Following a 2016 season that offered both scores for and scores against on special teams, the 2017 unit played under the radar, for lack of a better term. However, this season’s special teams group will be looking to help out their team in more ways than just field goals and touchbacks.

Unfortunately, the 2018 season wouldn’t start out as hoped for coordinator Brian Polian and his group. Kickoff specialist Jonathan Doer sent his first attempt out of bounds, punter and team captain Tyler Newsome had a disappointing punt or two, and the kickoff coverage team ended up allowing as many touchdowns as the Notre Dame defense.

However, matching up against Ball State might be just what this special teams unit needed. Given the lackluster offense, the Cardinals finished in the top 20 in punts per game last season, likely providing numerous opportunities for the Irish in this week’s meeting.

All things considered, a suffocating Notre Dame defense should pave the way for quite a few punt returns. While the Irish may not get their hands on as many kickoff returns as usual, there should be plenty of opportunity to go around. In a game where all else could be going right for Notre Dame, it makes sense for the special teams unit to try and pile on as well.
