With the exception of two games, SEC football produced an exciting Week 1 slate. How did those results impact the updated power rankings?
With the exception of two ranked matchups, the SEC didn’t really struggle much in way of strength of opponent. However, we did learn a bit about each team and how they could do this season as we head into bigger and harder games.
That being said, let’s start at the bottom and work our way up.
As the only team to take a loss in Week 1, the Volunteers moved down a spot and take the bottom of the barrel spot in the SEC. Tennessee lost 40-14 to No. 17 West Virginia. Yes, WVU is a ranked team and that did factor into my thought process. However, the performance that they put on was simply worthy of the bottom spot this week.
They face off against ETSU in Week 2, so hopefully, they will improve to 1-1 by this time next week.
The Kentucky Wildcats also moved down a spot after only taking down Central Michigan 35-20. The Wildcat defense did not have a night to remember for sure and the offense was subpar at best. They will start conference play in Week 2 with a trip to the Swamp, so all signs point to a 1-1 start for the Wildcats.
Could I be wrong about how next week will turn out for Kentucky? Maybe. However, what I’m not wrong about is that many fans have already started counting down to basketball season.
