3. SMU will not score an offensive touchdown

If TCU and Gary Patterson are known for anything its defense. The Horned Frogs held Southern to only one score in a second-quarter touchdown. Following that they shut down the Jaguars.

The Mustangs were held scoreless until the fourth quarter by North Texas and I expect even more of defensive performance from TCU. Pride will be on the line when these two teams meet up and the Horned Frogs will be prepared to play, especially on defense.

On defense, TCU held Southern to only nine first downs and 185 yards of total offense. Southern was held to 2.5 yards per carry for a total of 84 yards rushing. We should expect SMU to be better on offense than Southern but the results will be similar.

TCU ranked 19th in total defense in 2017 and 14th in S&P+ advanced statistics. In 2017, SMU did rank 12th in scoring offense but that was a different offense with a different head coach in Chad Morris. The post-Morris era could be tough early on for the Mustangs — especially without Courtland Sutton.
