Mississippi State Football: Dominant effort shows Kansas State is in trouble
It couldn’t have gone much worse for a highly thought of team in the Kansas State Wildcats against Mississippi State football in Week 2.
It was a big day on the road for Mississippi State football to start off the 2018 campaign coming against Power Five opponents. Last week, it was Mississippi State taking on the FCS Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at home at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. Mississippi State was dominant in its first action of the season, but it didn’t mean much since it came against SFA.
Week 2 looked much tougher for the Bulldogs in taking on the Kansas State Wildcats on the road. As one of the premier early kick-off games of Week 1 across the country, Mississippi State was looking to make a statement with a new head coach at the helm in Joe Moorhead. It seems as if this team was able to do just that with how Week 2 turned out in Manhattan, Kan.
Kansas State was coming into this big matchup with a near-loss in Week 1 coming against an FCS team in South Dakota. Bill Snyder and his squad were very lucky to get out of that game with a win, since the Wildcats spent much of the game down by a double-digit margin.
This game was not a good outing for either of the quarterbacks for Kansas State. Skylar Thompson and Alex Delton were both held at or lower than a completion percentage of 50. Starting running back Alex Barnes was also held out of the end zone, along with 75 rushing yards.
Instead, it was Mississippi State sophomore running back Kylin Hill that took over with 211 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Hill would add another touchdown receiving too. Senior Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald also had a nice season debut more than 300 total yards and two touchdowns.
While Mississippi State is proving that it belongs among the top 15 teams in the nation and best teams in the SEC West, Kansas State is starting to fall. In a Big 12 that is starting to separate itself, Kansas State is falling back with the likes of the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders early in the season.
This is a troubling sign with Kansas State by knocking off an FCS team by only three points in the season opener and losing by a final score of 31-10 at home in Week 2. It spells trouble for some tough upcoming matchups against the West Virginia Mountaineers, Oklahoma Sooners, and Oklahoma State Cowboys.
