1. Weather gave the underdog a shot, but they had to make the most of it

This game was delayed from it’s original start time of 8:00 p.m. ET due to rain and lightning in the area. Eventually, the storm cleared up enough to allow the game to start, but it was clear early on that the conditions weren’t going to be pristine.

That took the shootout potential of this game down a notch and opened the door for a nasty, grueling, slugfest between the Mustangs and the Frogs. Early on, it was clear that SMU was ready for the challenge. They opened up a 9-0 lead over TCU, capitalizing on a defense that looked like it was still awaiting the game’s restart later that evening.

Rain was never going to make a three-touchdown underdog the favorite on Friday, but it through enough of a wrench in TCU’s big-play potential that it gave SMU a chance. Teams that are able to adapt the quickest to adverse conditions gain a clear advantage. SMU just wasn’t able to keep it up for four full quarters.
