It’s refreshing to tell stories about a team doing great things off the field in addition to their onfield work. Colgate did just that as Hurricane Florence neared.

I live in the Southeast, so Hurricane Florence and all of its ugly side effects have been front of mind for most of the week.

Due to the nasty weather, a slew of college football teams have been forced to cancel their games. The storm has made for a chaotic schedule in college football, what with games being canceled, games being postponed, games being moved to new venues, and times being moved. FCS matchup Colgate vs. Furman was scheduled for this weekend, but due to Florence stubbornly hanging out over the Carolinas, the game was canceled.

The match was supposed to take place in Greenville, SC, this Saturday. That ain’t happening, kids.

Instead of just hopping on the plane home or complaining, the Colgate Raider team took the opportunity to give back to the hurricane evacuees. While the team was obviously disappointed not to get on the gridiron, they felt that football was not half as important as helping out those people most affected by the storm.

Colgate head coach Dan Hunt said in a release,

"We immediately gave up our hotel rooms so that more rooms are now available to those coming inland. But we still bought the meals we were going to have and requested that the hotel serve those meals to the people who have been relocated, on us. We were going to have Chick-fil-A delivered to the airplane after the game but have sent instructions that those meals be distributed wherever it could do the most good."

After all of the nonsense with Baylor and Urban Meyer, it’s fantastic to hear about a team that thinks about the community first. I bet you that Colgate just earned a whole bunch of new fans. I know I’ll be rooting for them all season.
