Miami football took its time in beating the Rockets. Here is how the Hurricanes got the victory over Toledo in Week 3.

Jason Candle’s Toledo Rockets came out cold and trailed Miami 21-7 at halftime. The Toledo game plan was not built around their strengths or Miami’s weaknesses as Candle’s offense tried to run into the middle of the Miami defense. The Rockets then fired back and closed the gap to 21-14 with Rockets quarterback Mitchell Guadagni mixing in throws into the middle of the field with scrambling for yards against the ‘Canes defense.

Miami decided to rely on their running game and Malik Rosier showed his athleticism on the ground rushing for 80 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns. Rosier’s passing game wasn’t pretty but he did toss two touchdowns and didn’t turn the ball over in the ‘Canes 49 to 24 victory. Rosier really turned up his chemistry with sophomore receiver Jeff Thomas who hauled in five Rosier passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

The Miami defensive line had its ups and downs with Gerald Willis III earning an NFL paycheck with every snap. However, the linebackers still struggled in space and the defensive backs gave up big gains to Toledo’s receiving corps. Miami improves to a 2-1 record on the year while Toledo falls to 1-1.

The Hurricanes did what they should have done which is beat the Rockets convincingly but it took far too long for Miami to create that chasm. Miami’s 14 point fourth quarter was the difference maker, as was Deejay Dallas running for tough yards. Dallas broke the 100-yard mark on the afternoon. Miami faces cross-town rival FIU on September 22nd while Toledo hosts the Nevada Wolfpack.
