The No. 1 safety in the 2019 recruiting class Daxton Hill committed to Michigan Football, making an already impressive defensive haul even better.
The rich get richer. That’s true in life and it’s certainly true in the world of college football recruiting. Michigan football became the latest to exemplify that axiom when the landed 5-star safety Daxton Hill from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Edging out the in-state Oklahoma Sooners was no small feat, but the talent gap with Hill headed north is starting to get ridiculous.
In addition to Hill, Michigan has the nation’s No. 2 strongside defensive end, Chris Hinton, and the No. 7 defensive tackle, Mazi Smith. Fellow blue-chip defensive end recruits David Ojabo and Mike Morris round out a class that should make an immediate impact on the field for the Wolverines soon.
This has become par for the course for the Wolverines, who have found themselves in somewhat of a “chicken or the egg” situation. Michigan has finished inside the top five in total defense in each of the last three seasons. Whether that led to the highly touted recruits or the recruits made the defense, the end result is a tall task for every team that takes on the maize and blue in the near future.
Hill’s commitment boosts Michigan up to the No. 7 recruiting class in the 247 Composite National Rankings. He’s their second 5-star commitment, and the Wolverines aren’t done. They remain in the hunt the nation’s No. 3 defensive end Zach Harrison as well as North Carolina athlete Quavaris Crouch. Picking up a commitment from either of those two would put them on the cusp of the top five.
Regardless of how many more players Michigan takes this go around, they currently sit at 23 players verbally committed, this dominant defense looks like it’s poised to stick around for a long while to come.
