Iowa State Football: Cyclones survive scare from Akron
3. Montgomery would get Heisman hype if he played for a blue-blood
The Heisman Trophy is a popularity contest. It hasn’t fallen off-kilter enough that undeserving players are taking how the award, but it has boxed out some worthy candidates in recent memory simply because they didn’t wear the right logo on their helmets.
Iowa State does not have the same kind of national pull as Oklahoma, Louisville, Alabama, Oregon or Florida State, the last five programs to hoist the Heisman Trophy. That bias towards the big names is what’s keeping UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton off the podium and muffling any potential consideration Iowa State running back David Montgomery could earn this season.
Montgomery was as electric as ever against Akron. He carried the ball 23 times for 107 yards and one touchdown. His 2018 stat line is a bit underwhelming (126 yards and one touchdown in his first two games), but that’s more of a byproduct of tough games to start the season than it is an indication of any sort of worrisome struggles from Montgomery himself.
The road is going to get easier for Iowa State and Montgomery is going to put up big numbers in bunches. He won’t get much national recognition, but he will win some games for the Cyclones in 2018.
