Miami football dominated the FIU Golden Panthers in Miami. Here are the takeaways from Miami’s big win, despite a late Panther push.

The Miami Hurricanes dominated the FIU Golden Panthers 31-17 at Hard Rock Stadium. The former Hurricanes head football coach, Butch Davis, led his Panthers cross-town only to trail Mark Richt’s ‘Canes 31-0 until the 4th quarter. The Hurricanes struggled to score until redshirt freshman quarterback N’Kosi Perry came in as the signal caller.

Perry, a six-foot-four, 185 pound quarterback out of Florida came on and went seventeen-of-twenty five passing for 224 yards and three scores with one interception. Perry got the offense going as Mike Harley caught seven balls for 76 yards the ball was spread around to Brevin Jordan and Lawrence Cager in the Miami passing game.

Travis Homer carried the ball 13 times for 114 yards and a touchdown while Deejay Dallas logged 58 total yards. The offense wasn’t the only dominant side of the ball for Miami against FIU.

On defense, the ‘Canes had double-digit tackles for loss while holding FIU to 50 percent completion rate. FIU was stymied to 6.1 yards per passing attempt and 0.7 yards per rushing attempt while Miami’s defenders dominated the FIU offense.

For FIU, CJ Worton caught five passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns as a silver lining to an otherwise dismal homecoming for Butch Davis. He came back to Miami but it wasn’t the Orange Bowl he was coaching in this Saturday.

When Davis was the Hurricanes head coach the ‘Canes played at the Orange Bowl and didn’t have an Indoor Practice Facility but did put together the greatest compilation of talent in the history of college football- which resulted in the 2001 National Championship run the Hurricanes went on.

Up next, the Hurricanes will host the UNC Tar Heels on Thursday, September 27th on ESPN. Miami should be a heavy favorite of the Heels at Hard Rock in Miami Gardens. It’s safe to assume Perry will be the starting quarterback while Malik Rosier will take a backseat to the young signal caller.
