UCF Football: 5 overreactions from Knights’ win over Florida Atlantic
3. Lane Kiffin is nowhere near a top coach
Lane Kiffin has been benefiting from the success of other coaches for too long. Most recently, Kiffin was the offensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban. At Alabama, he was the offensive coordinator for three years. In 2014, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which goes to college football’s top assistant coach for the year.
However, even after Kiffin left, Alabama’s offense continues to produce. Throughout his career, he has been accredited success while working with or for another coach. However, the most recent times Kiffin has been on his own, success came only in the short-term.
In 2011, when Kiffin was with the USC Trojans, the team went 10-2. However, the years following, the Trojans struggled much more significantly. The same is true for his current tenure at FAU. Last year, the Owls got off to a slow start but finished 11-3. This year, the Owls have already earned two losses in four games. Sure, the losses came from good teams, but the games were not competitive.
If you want to be considered a good team and coach, you need to win tough games, like say UCF against Auburn in the 2018 Peach Bowl.
