Wisconsin Football: Badgers prove themselves with win over Iowa
Wisconsin football faced a critical must-win game after falling at home to BYU, they got it, defeating the dangerous Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium.
The sky was falling as the Badgers watched a solitary football fly through the uprights at Camp Randall Stadium. As the ball hit the mesh behind the uprights, BYU celebrated the biggest upset victory of the young season and Wisconsin braced themselves for their eventual plummet down the AP Top 25.
No longer in the ranks of the undefeated, Wisconsin fell out of the national spotlight. For the Badgers, the unfortunate result set up another test for this team. If they wanted to reach their goals and play in the Big Ten Title Game and have a shot at the College Football Playoff, they needed to take care of business the rest of the way. Could they do it?
Early returns indicate the Badgers are willing to keep fighting. Wisconsin went into Kinnick Stadium on Saturday night and edged the Iowa Hawkeyes on their home turf. Many good teams have fallen to the Hawkeyes’ on the road, but Wisconsin persevered, rallying from a 17-14 third quarter deficit to win the game.
Alex Hornibrook was superb, completing 17-of-22 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Jonathan Taylor contributed 113 yards on the ground on 25 carries.
Iowa was able to move the ball in this one, but they were turned away once they crossed midfield time and time again. The Wisconsin defense stood tallest in the final moments, intercepting Hawkeyes’ quarterback Nate Stanley to set up one final clock-killing drive from the offense.
Wisconsin faced adversity and came out on top. It’s going to be a challenging road ahead, but the Badgers haven’t given up just yet. This team is resilient, and that makes them dangerous.
