College football injury report, Week 5: Devastating news for Virginia Tech
The college football season is marching along and already we’ve lost several star players. Here’s an update on who’s in and who’s out heading into Week 5:
Quarterbacks
Josh Jackson – Virginia Tech
The week just keeps getting worse for Virginia Tech. First, there was the Hokies embarrassing upset on the road at Old Dominion, and now the news that starting quarterback Josh Jackson has fractured his fibula and will be out indefinitely.
Junior Ryan Willis will start for the Hokies on Saturday and the offense may not take a step back. But this, unfortunately, feels like the end of Virginia Tech’s hopes of a Coastal run.
Jake Luton – Oregon State
Luton is unlikely to play this Saturday vs. Arizona due to an ankle injury. Luton has been injured several times in his career at Oregon State, including a concussion suffered against Ohio State that sidelined him for the much of the first two games of the year. Luton has passed for 372 yards and a touchdown this year. Sophomore Conor Blount will start in his place.
Wilton Speight – UCLA
Speight has been out since he was injured in the Bruins opening night match-up against Cincinnati. Speight, a transfer from the University of Michigan, was supposed to be the answer at quarterback for Chip Kelly, but the season has not gone as planned.
True freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been starting in Speight’s absence and has struggled mightily. The freshman has completed just 54% of his passes and the Bruins have stumbled to an 0-3 record.
Kilton Anderson – Coastal Carolina
Anderson will not practice at all this week for the Chanticleers and is doubtful heading into Coastal Carolina’s match-up with Troy with an ankle sprain. Both teams sit atop the Sun Belt and losing Anderson would be a huge blow. Anderson has completed 39 of 56 passes for 564 yards and six touchdowns.
