College football injury report, Week 5: Devastating news for Virginia Tech
Defense/Special Teams
Nick Bosa – Ohio State
In a bit of devastating news, it was announced that star defensive end Nick Bosa will be out until November after having abdominal surgery. Bosa is a major part of the Buckeye defense and departing at the worst time, with No. 4 Ohio State traveling to No. 9 Penn State on Saturday. Bosa has four sacks and six tackles for loss this season.
Antoine Winfield – Minnesota
The captain and star defensive back is out for the season with a foot injury suffered against Maryland. Winfield made a dramatic over the shoulder interception to preserve Minnesota’s victory over Fresno State earlier this season. Minnesota is a completely different team without Winfield.
Demarcus Christmas – Florida State
Christmas will play this Saturday against Louisville after sitting out last week’s game against NIU. He is an experienced redshirt senior who is a major piece of the Seminole defensive line. His return will be big for Florida State.
Richard Burney, Jordan Mack, and Malcolm Cook – Virginia
Having to try and stop NC State’s offense is tough. Having to do it without three defensive starters is even tougher. Burney, a defensive end, is out for the season. Mack, the starting inside linebacker, will miss 4-6 weeks and Cook will miss Saturday’s game.
Kendall Joseph, Linebacker, Clemson
Joseph is questionable vs Syracuse this weekend after sitting out last weekend against Georgia Tech with a groin injury. Head coach Dabo Swinney was hopeful his star linebacker would be back and even went as far to say he expects him to play. We will most likely have to wait til Saturday to find out for sure.
Brandon Wright – Georgia State
Wright, the kicker for the Panthers, is dealing with an injury that doesn’t allow him to kick field goals. Wright is only 1-3 on field goals this season. His back-up, Barry Brown, is 2-3. Both kickers have had a kick blocked.
