Penn State Football: Top 3 White Out games of all-time
By Shane Lunnen
3. 2016 vs. Ohio State
Just two years ago at this time, the Nittany Lions were in flux. Coming off a 49-10 drubbing at the hands of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Penn State sat at 2-2. What happened over the next nine games was something special.
After the Michigan loss, Penn State needed overtime to beat Minnesota but they waxed Maryland the following week. Sitting at 4-2 and after a bye, second-ranked Ohio State was up next.
The Buckeyes controlled most of the first half, building a 12-0 lead. Late in the first half, quarterback Trace McSorley would find wide receiver Chris Godwin in the endzone to cut the lead to 12-7. In the third quarter, the Buckeyes would score a touchdown and get a safety on a poor snap on a Penn State punt attempt. It was 21-7 going into the third quarter and it appeared it would be the Buckeyes night.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Nittany Lions. They would get a quick touchdown, would block a punt to set up a field goal, and then in the video above, block a field goal and return it for the go-ahead touchdown. Beaver Stadium and the White Out was rocking. The Buckeyes would have one last drive but the Nittany Lion defense stood tall, securing James Franklin a signature win. The White Out flooded onto the field as Nittany Nation celebrated the huge upset.
The win would catapult Penn State to a 10-2 regular season record and into the Big Ten championship game which they beat Wisconsin to win their first conference title since 2008. Although the Lions would lose a very entertaining Rose Bowl to USC, the 2016 season put Penn State back on the national map and the White Out was a huge part of it.
