Prime-time opportunities

Rashaad Penny ran for 2,248 yards and 19 touchdowns last year for San Diego State. Now, I’m not saying Travis Etienne will do that, but if he comes close, you best bet he’ll be headed to New York City later this year.

One thing Etienne has going for him that Penny didn’t was the spotlight.

Look, Kelly Bryant wasn’t likely to become a Heisman contender like Deshaun Watson for the Tigers. Trevor Lawrence, as just a true freshman, wasn’t either. But if Clemson runs the table and is competing for another national title, the voters will take note.

Etienne’s 203-yard showing vs. Syracuse in a come-from-behind victory with a third-string quarterback makes an impact. Now, the sophomore will need to continue showcasing his skills each week to the nation.

Clemson’s game with Wake Forest should be on a major network, along with upcoming dates with NC State and Florida State. While the latter isn’t quite to the level of past meetings, Tigers-‘Noles still gets attention around the ACC.

Etienne should have no issues finding holes vs. the Demon Deacons, who surrender almost 170 yards on the ground a game.
