Clemson was a no-brainer pick to make their fourth consecutive appearance in the College Football Playoff entering the 2018 season. It was hard to discount a program with four potential first-round draft picks on the defensive line and a pair of blue-chip quarterbacks.
Quarterback, once thought of as a position of strength for this team, has now turned into a five-alarm fire. After head coach Dabo Swinney named Trevor Lawrence the starter, supplanted QB1 Kelly Bryant announced he was transferring from the program. Down one elite quarterback, Clemson prepared to host Syracuse in Week 5. Then disaster struck.

Trevor Lawrence was knocked out of the Syracuse game early in the first half, forcing Swinney to turn to Chase Brice, the backup to the backup when the season began. Lawrence’s injury was severe enough to prevent him from returning to the game on Saturday. If it keeps him out any longer Clemson is going to have to ask yet another quarterback to play significant minutes.
