Georgia football held a commanding lead by the time the clock hit zero, but once again the Bulldogs weren’t all that impressive in victory.

As their counterparts in the SEC West continue to crush every opponent (Alabama blasted Louisiana, 56-14), Georgia has gotten by with relatively uninspiring wins. In Week 4 they edged Missouri by 14 points. This go round it was a two score win over a Tennessee squad that was blasted 47-21 by a sporadic Florida offense.

Jake Fromm was fine. He completed 16-of-22 passes for 185 yards. He didn’t throw any touchdowns, but he didn’t turn the ball over either. He did put the ball on the turf once, but his teammate Isaac Nauta scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 31 yards for the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the game.

The running attack was noticeably muted. Nauta’s fumble recovery was the longest carry of the day. None of the running backs were able to break a big play. Justin Field’s 15-yard garbage time scamper was the longest run after Nauta’s on the day. The running back production was especially disappointing coming from a Kirby Smart team that prides itself on being able to run through any defensive front on the country.

The lull in production wasn’t smoothed over by a defense that never let up. Tennessee was ineffective on third down (2-for-10) and barely managed to crack 200 yards of total offense. Georgia’s 17-point halftime lead proved the be enough scoring to win the game, a luxury that most teams in college football would happily accept.

Georgia remains the unquestioned top dog in the East, but they won’t be able to sleepwalk through a conference that includes No. 5 LSU, No. 10 Auburn a red-hot No. 17 Kentucky team. This was good enough to get the job done against Tennessee, but the bar needs to be raised in Athens, soon.
