Ohio State Football: Buckeyes best Penn State to take charge of Big Ten
White Out Games Help
Since 2004, Penn State’s student sections have been planning and organizing “White Out” games, once a year, to help their home team. It started against Purdue in 04′, and has now expanded to the whole stadium and is set for the toughest opponent of the season.
Penn State’s Beaver Stadium holds approximately 106,000 fans and is one of the loudest stadiums in the country due to the way the stadium was built. Stadiums that are enclosed, and are more compact and vertically developed, facilitate high decibels levels, or volume. The sound level is so significant that, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, ensured his team practiced this week with speakers turned all the way up on the sidelines.
During white out games, the fan’s and the player’s energy levels increase dramatically from an already high level. Penn State coach James Franklin, was seen raising his hands at the Penn State crowd in an effort to get the fans to cheer louder while the Nittany Lions were on defense.
The point of the white out is to both, give the home team the advantage early on before each team truly settles into the game. This year, it worked for Penn State in the sense that the number two offense in the country was held to only seven points in the first half. Were this game not a whiteout, Ohio State may have started off the game much better.
