Texas Tech Football: 5 players who earned Blitz Stickers vs. West Virginia
By Phil Poling
1. Jett Duffey, Quarterback
Prior to Saturday’s noon kickoff between West Virginia and Texas Tech, not many were familiar with backup quarterback Jett Duffey. Kliff Kingsbury, however, appears to have a garden of great quarterbacks at his disposal in Lubbock.
After starter Alan Bowman left the game with an injury, Kingsbury turned to Duffey for a much-needed offensive spark. The Red Raiders were trailing by 25 at home, playing their third-string quarteback. What did they have to lose?
He threw a pick on his first drive and followed it up with two consecutive punts, but got loose from the pocket in the third and the dynamic of the game had changed. Suddenly WVU had to contain him to the pocket; they couldn’t.
Duffey carried the ball 15 times for 86 yards and a touchdown, including an impressive scamper on a fourth down attempt that had the announcers going nuts. He also completed 16-of-27 pass attempts for 172 yards and another touchdown. He did throw another interception in addition to the one that ended the first half, and this one — picked off and returned for a touchdown by Keith Washington — ultimately ended the game.
