Florida Football: 5 Bold predictions for October
2. Feleipe Franks becomes the unquestioned QB1
The work Mullen did with Russell, Prescott and, eventually, Nick Fitzgerald at Mississippi State earned Mullen acclaim as a quarterback whisperer. He turned relatively unheralded players into some of the better quarterbacks in the SEC, a task that should be easier given the increased talent pool at his disposal in Gainesville.
Entering the 2018 season Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask and Emory Jones were pitted against each other in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback position. Franks, who was named the starter out of the gate last year, won the battle but his early production hasn’t inspired confidence.
Franks had big games against Charleston Southern and Tennessee, throwing eight of his 12 touchdowns against those two overmatched opponents. In the Gators’ closer games (vs Kentucky, @ Mississippi State) he was a more pedestrian with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Trask and Jones have combined for four attempts on the season. Once Franks settles down any calls for his job will cease. This is his job, and he’ll lock it down in October.
