Mississippi State football has had a rough couple of games, but even without momentum, October could be a special month.

One of the meany teams in college football with a new coach this year, Mississippi State has already experienced a roller-coaster first month of the season.

Joe Moorhead took over after spending time as Penn State’s offensive coordinator and it looked like he’d be able to fix Nick Fitzgerald. He’s had mixed results in the first five games of the year, going 3-2, but Fitzgerald is coming off his worst game of the season in a loss to Dan Mullen’s Florida Gators.

Things can always turn around, but it’s going to take a lot of work to get the Bulldogs back into contending mode after two consecutive defeats. The schedule doesn’t get much easier this month, either, with Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M on the schedule.

Mississippi State needs to regroup as the calendar turns to October.

5. Montez Sweat records five sacks

When Montez Sweat started his career at Michigan State, head coach Mark Dantonio saw the potential in him, and so did the rest of the fan base. Unfortunately for that MSU, he decided to transfer to Mississippi State and is utilizing his potential with the Bulldogs.

It was only a matter of time before he broke out and he did just that in his first full season with the Bulldogs, finishing as an All-SEC performer with 15.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.

Now in his final collegiate season, expectations are at an all-time high and he’s gotten off to a red-hot start, recording five sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss through five games. He’s on pace to smash his previous sack record and he’s going to come just 0.5 sacks shy of that after the month of October.

Sweat will finish the month with five sacks in just three games, nearing his career-best and he’s also going to add another eight tackles for loss to hit his career-high of 15.5.
