BYU Football: 3 takeaways from disappointing loss to Utah State
By Zach Bigalke
BYU football had few answers for rival Utah State when they met on Friday night. Here are three takeaways from the Aggies’ win for the Old Wagon Wheel.
Battling for the Old Wagon Wheel on Friday night in Provo, Utah State went on the road and dominated the Cougars in a 45-20 victory. That win moved the Aggies to 4-1 on the season, and losing pushed BYU down to .500 after a rough night at home.
We knew coming into the game that Utah State could play offense, as the Aggies ranked fourth overall in scoring offense by averaging 51.5 points per game. They racked up 475 yards per game on average through the month of September. While they didn’t quite put that many points on the scoreboard at LaVell Edwards Stadium, the Aggies did overpower their rival early and often in a blowout on the trip south.
After upsetting Wisconsin, the Cougars beat FCS McNeese but then followed up with a pair of losses. Falling at top-10 Washington wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but they were expected to put up a better fight against an old non-conference rival currently residing in the Mountain West. Though the two have never been members of the same conference at the same time, the bad blood is all too real.
What did we learn from the slugfest on Friday night on BYU’s home turf? Here are three things to take away from Utah State’s conquest of the Old Wagon Wheel.
